How to Use 4-Wheel Drive in a 1989 Silverado
- 1). Look down on the floor near the center console, just underneath the radio, and grasp the four-wheel-drive shift lever.
- 2). Shift the lever slightly to the right and then down to "4-high" or "4-low." Both settings will engage all four wheels; however, "4-low" provides more torque and is best used at speeds under 25 mph.
- 3). Drive a short distance forward to allow the wheels to make at least two full revolutions. This is necessary for the automatic hubs to lock into place, engaging the front wheels.
- 4). Operate the vehicle normally. Remember to disengage four-wheel drive once the vehicle is on a surface that provides adequate traction.
