How to Create Your Own Hair Dye Color
- 1). Put on the gloves and an old T-shirt. Because you need to make your dye strong enough to color your hair, it will also stain your hands and clothing if you do not protect them. Also, if you are going to be mixing the dye on your kitchen counter, lay down some newspaper to protect your counter top in case of spills.
- 2). Mix the contents of four Kool-Aid packets with 1/2 cup of water in a saucepan. This is where you can get creative with color. You can create your own custom shades by mixing different flavors. For example, if you want your hair to be a burgundy color, try mixing two packets of grape-flavored Kool-Aid with two packets of black cherry-flavored Kool-Aid. Experiment with as many combination as you like until you find the perfect shade.
- 3). Bring the mixture to a boil after you have created the color you want to dye your hair. Boil for about 5 minutes and remove from heat. Let the mixture sit until it has cooled enough you can handle it without burning yourself. This usually takes about 10-15 minutes.
- 4). Apply the Kool-Aid mixture directly to your hair with your gloved fingertips. Coat all of your hair for an all over color, or just dye chunks of hair around your face to make funky highlights. After you have covered the hair you want dyed, place a shower cap on your head.
- 5). Wait about 30 minutes. Remove the shower cap and rinse hair until the water runs clear. Shampoo and condition hair, then style as usual.
