Hair Care for African American Men

38

    Moisture is Critical

    • Ethnic hair is a bit dryer than other types of hair. For this reason daily washing is not necessary and may even be detrimental to the health of the hair. When you do wash, use a moisturizing shampoo with low pH levels. Pay special attention to the conditioning step and invest in quality hair conditioner.

    Oil Your Scalp

    • For African American men with shorter hair, oiling the scalp should be easier than for those with longer hair. Oiling the scalp promotes hair growth and healthy hair from the roots down. Part the hair and apply oil along the part. Do this across the head, parting from the crown of the head down to the nape of the neck. After the whole scalp has been oiled, brush the hair to spread the moisture around. Do this once per week or every time the hair is washed.

    Don't Be Afraid to Wash

    • Washing the hair is just as important for African American men as it is for men of other races. While it does need to be done less often, it is still a critical step in promoting moisture and strength. Never use a 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner as they do not usually provide enough moisture. It is recommended to wash the hair three to four times per month.

    Go Easy on the Chemicals

    • Relaxers and texturizers are popular among African American men and women, but they must be taken in small doses. These products contain chemicals that are often harmful to the health of the hair. Avoid them at all costs; if this is not possible, use them sparingly.
