Food safety starts even before food reaches the kitchen with conscious buying. The World Health Organization estimates 3.2 million children under the age of 5 die from food poisoning-related illnesses each year. Food contamination is a major factor when considering whether to buy organic, free-range and sustainable items. Buying local and organic are two ways to protect the environment as well as protect loved ones. - Many consumers are worried about paying extra prices for organic or local produce. Instead of opting for large chain stores for cheaper prices, visit farmer's markets to buy straight from the farm. Many stores are also carrying organic options or buying from local farmers due to popularity. Research which stores carry local items and read labels to ensure additives, such as antibiotics, aren't contained in meats.
- In order to protect people against food contamination, food suppliers are working on innovative packaging to keep out foodborne illnesses. Look for natural packaging that doesn't transfer harsh chemicals or plastics into food and water. Buy green packaging to cut back on waste and reduce environmental harm. Wal-Mart has pledged to reduce packaging by 5 percent worldwide by 2013.
- With food recalls increasing in the news in recent years, taking the time to simply clean food thoroughly and cook completely can avoid many health risks. Food safety is easiest in the kitchen with a clean environment. Make sure to avoid cross contamination with uncooked meats and other foods. Cooking eggs and meats completely, leaving no red meat, will avoid diseases such as salmonella.
- State health departments rate restaurants according to strict food safety guidelines. Only eat at businesses rated "A" or higher to avoid the risk of illness. Cross contamination and cleanliness are basic guidelines for establishments that will keep customers happy and safe from food contamination.
