The World’s Most Multi-Cultural Cities

26
Every year the world shrinks - not literally (no need to panic) but for those intent on travelling far and wide it is far easier to get around than ever before. This is a marvellous thing and it has led vast expanses of humanity to move from one corner of the globe to another to seek a better life and better economic prospects. Immigration is a great thing as it enriches people and the cultures which receive them. This process has led to the creation of several, incredible multi-cultural cities that are truly worth visiting. Trips to London, weeks in Toronto, or New York holidays will introduce you to the wonders of multiculturalism.

Toronto is Canada's largest city and one of the biggest in North America. Beyond that it is the business capital of the country and has thus drawn a huge influx of immigrants looking for jobs and better prospects. The city has every culture you can possibly imagine with particularly strong Portuguese, Indian, Chinese and Vietnamese communities - you can venture from one area to another and see a whole different part of the world on every block.

Across the Atlantic lies London, one of the world's grandest cities and a global economic hub. Indeed, this is an incredibly busy city and there is always something going on here. Like Toronto, London lays claim to the title of the most multi-cultural city and it has huge populations from every country you can imagine. This lends the city an incredibly vibrant feel. Head out to a great Ethiopian restaurant or take in a fascinating show to witness this first hand.

Returning to the shores of North America, we find ourselves in New York a city built upon immigration. Indeed, in the 19th Century the city was the portal for the millions of Europeans who sought out the American Dream and its promise of free land and prosperity. Many immigrants passed through Ellis Island and did not venture much further, and there exists to this day huge Irish, Chinese and Polish communities in New York City. While on New York holidays you would be wise to check out China Town, Little Italy and the many other small communities nestled here and there - you will find some truly amazing food and have the chance to see how these cultures have nestled into the great melting pot that is the United States.

The world is full of incredible cultures, foods and people and it is the goal of the traveller to seek these things out. This is what makes going abroad so wonderful as you get to see how other people live and step out of your own shoes for one tiny second and view the world through an entirely different prism. Sadly, we only have so much time for such journeys and you can never visit every country - but by travelling to one of these three great cities you will have the chance to have a fleeting encounter with so many cultures and get a sense of what it looks like when all the world's people come together in one place.
