Searching For Work

8
My dad led by example.
He worked his butt off and made certain my five brothers and I took notice.
I worked my own lemonade stand, paper routes, dog walking, trash recycling, snow shoveling and odd ball jobs supplied by neighbors, to keep my early youth occupied.
At sixteen my parents instructed me to obtain my working papers and my first paycheck came from working as an orderly at St.
Vincents Hospital.
The cart to transport bulk goods throughout the spacious complex was larger than me.
I was so happy to receive my first paycheck before being informed by mom that your first check goes to your father.
My dad grinned when I presented it to him and told me to keep it while reminding me to be the best I could be in any occupation, no matter how trivial.
I received too many blows in my fight career but I'm going to list what I can remember of the many jobs I was employed, or employed myself.
I went twelve years with only sporadic benefits as good jobs were tough to come by but failure was not an option.
I worked as a dorm director and graduate assistant coach at Missouri Valley college from which I graduated with honors while substitute teaching at the local high school.
While in school I worked the graveyard shift as a security guard and waited tables at a local restaurant.
Moberly High School hired me as assistant football coach and History teacher.
In the summer I worked hauling hay and painting buildings.
The N.
Y.
Giants signed me to a football contract but I was released after two exhibition games.
I went to work as a prefect (counselor for juvenile delinquents) for one year then went back to the high school I attended to coach football and teach physical education for two years.
In the summer I worked as a mover for Bekins and provided security at a local bar (Doherty's Tavern).
Intermitenly I worked at the Esquire club as a bartender and Joyce's tavern as a bouncer.
Whichever place paid better and offered me the most hours.
One summer I worked as a group leader at Camp Olympus in the Poconos and for two years I worked on the docks in Port Newark as a container loader.
When things really looked bleak I began a career as strip a gram self employee (I dressed as a nerd and stripped down to briefs for women's birthday and batchelorette parties).
Sometimes they had huge extravaganza's for women only nights at clubs and the pay was extraordinaire.
Boxing was more my style than dancing and I began a professional career to make ends meet while working as a substitute teacher in N.
Y.
C.
If money was tight I did a few nights as a livery cab driver.
Thanks to boxing I did a print add for Vectra Carpeting and parlayed that into some national commercials and movie gigs.
I was confined mostly to backround work but remain in the screen actors guild.
At the age of thirty I joined the N.
Y.
C.
Fire Dept and did twenty years full time while also working as a personal trainer, fitness instructor/ national presenter, gym owner, substitute teacher, bus driver, hotel security and fire safety director.
There was never an option not to work.
Why should someone take care of me when there are plenty of opportunities to take care of myself.
My health has been failing me some since 9/11/2001 so I have turned to a hopeful career in writing and blogging.
If I failed it was my fault since the opportunities are there if you will only persevere.
What irks me most nowadays is the attitude of our politicians.
You can substitute names but most fit the same mold.
I'll use Nancy Pelosi as my example but you can substitute any Democrat and Republican to draw similar conclusions.
The names may change but the repertoire remains the same.
Nancy says unemployment insurance gets the most bang for its buck as an entitlement program in our society.
Yet she won't step down from her job and give an unemployed individual the opportunity to live as she is accustomed.
Is this fair Nancy? She wants to hand money to individuals when it isn't her money because there are no jobs.
This is a canard since work will be secured if you are ambitious.
To just hand someone anything removes the desire to compete and win.
Pelosi finds this favorable because these same people, with no initiative or sense of urgency, will pull the ballot lever for Pelosi.
Now if Nancy Pelosi would hand out her personal wealth and encourage individuals to work, while nudging them towards employment and personal independence rather than government dependency, I would give her praise.
While her personal bank account thrives and her vineyard business prospers I would like to see her get down in the trenches and assist someone hands-on.
Is that above you Nancy? Won't you demonstrate to others personally how you achieved your millions.
I'm sure is wasn't accomplished through unemployment insurance so why deny your success to fellow Americans.
They want what you have.
Woman-up and demonstrate, get your hands dirty, instead of pontificating and taking the hard earned wealth of the American people who don't have it nearly as good as yourself.
