Origins

• International Woman's Day began as a socialist political event primarily practiced in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. The first event was recognized on March 19, 1911 in Germany. Although it is unclear who was the original founder of this movement, historians believe German socialist Clara Zetkin played a large role in its progress. The movement has expanded, reaching countries all over the world such as Saudi Arabia, Russia and China.
  
  

Features

• In 2010, the celebration focused on drawing attention to the hardships suffered by displaced women as a result of war and other armed conflicts. These women are often exposed to violence such as sexual assault, discrimination and intimidation.
  
  

Controversies

• In some cases, the celebration of International Woman's Day has led to questionable practices that discriminate against men. In several areas of the world, public institutions have closed its doors to men, in honor of International Woman's Day. Tower Hamlets Council in London, for instance, closed off one of its libraries to men to celebrate the occasion.
