How to Troubleshoot Generac Home Generators
- 1). Turn the Generac home generator off if it is on. Remove all the AC plugs that are connected to the outlets on one end of the generator. Press the "Start" button to start the Generac and let two minutes pass. Plug the AC plugs back into the sockets in the following and specific manner: any household 120V AC plug into the 120/220V, 15 amp receptacle that is at the end of the generator, above and to the right of the grille; any household 12V DC plug into the 12V DC, 10 amp receptacle that is at the end of the generator, above the grille and to the left of the 120/220V AC receptacle; any heavy duty (heater, vacuum cleaner, etc.) appliance plug into the 120V, 20 amp receptacle that is at the end of the generator, above the 12V DC, 10 amp receptacle, which is above the grille.
- 2). Look at the system problem indicator lights on the control panel attached to the Generac to see if the high temperature light is lit as the generator turns itself back off. Unscrew the oil cap on the crankcase. Place a funnel in the hole and pour in a quart of the approved motor oil. Screw the oil cap on. Press the "Start" button at the top of the Generac. Start the Generac home generator.
- 3). Examine the circuit breakers on the AC receptacles that are all at one end of the Generac home generator to see if the button on the front is sticking out. Push the button back in to re-engage the circuit breaker so power will flow from the AC receptacle to any device plugged into it.
- 4). Place a spirit level on the top of the Generac home generator. Note whether the bubble is between the two lines in the level's panel. Place wood blocks beneath the generator to level out the bubble if it is not even so that the automatic cutoff in the Generac does not activate itself. .
- 5). Look for the fuel valve that is on one side of the Generac, above the "Idle" switch, which is to the right of the grille. Turn the valve to the "On" position before starting the Generac so the home generator stops running rough. Check that the "Idle" switch is in the "On" position also before starting the Generac.
