With the divorce rate in the Unites States constantly pushing 50%, it's sad to think that you and/or half of your married friends are likely to end up in divorce.
If you haven't already, you will notice that in the majority of the cases the men end up getting the raw end of the deal regardless of whether or not it was their "fault".
This happens for a couple of reasons as most states have divorce and child custody laws that favor women, and 75% of the women involved are more prepared than the men.
They may be following the advice of an attorney right now and the man will have no idea until it is too late.
Let's say, for the sake of this article you are a man who has just realized that your marriage heading towards a divorce.
Obviously, the biggest step that you have to take in a divorce case is to be prepared.
Unfortunately, you may think that all it takes is getting a divorce attorney as fast as you can.
This is done in such haste that it can easily end up being the biggest mistake that you make.
Research is the Key!Jumping in with an attorney without doing anything else will end up costing you big time in the long run.
One important thing to remember is that most divorce attorneys are in it for one thing...
Money! And one way that they can maximize their money is to draw out the divorce proceedings for as long as they possibly can.
So choosing the right attorney can make or break you for a number of different reasons.
*Here's a quick tip, if you see an attorney or law firm advertising themselves late at night on cable television channels or you constantly hear their ads on your local radio station...
Run the other way! The best attorneys gain clients by "word of mouth", they don't need to advertise.
Ask "real" friends or co-workers if they have any experience with a good divorce attorney.
Again, do your research!Just because you find yourself a high-priced attorney doesn't necessarily mean that he/she is better that the next guy.
And one more thing, don't ever try to reach some sort of settlement by going through your wife's attorney.
That is the quickest way to guarantee that you are going to get screwed.
While you search for your "perfect" attorney...
Here's some things that you should do immediately: 1) Close all joint accounts and credit cards.
2) Make sure that your wife cannot get a hold of your business and personal financial records.
3) Make sure your children (if there are any) know that you are not leaving them.

Box for any correspondence that you need to keep private.
5) Stop any spending that is not needed.
(This is will bring down your current standard of living and may result in lower maintenance payments.
) I can tell you from experience that everyone will have some sort of advice for you.
Some of it may be good, but a majority of it will be a waste of time and money.
Think about it very carefully because the actions that you take now will influence your life for years to come.
The easiest (and cheapest) way to find out more genuine advice on surviving a divorce and/or a child custody battle is through the internet.
