Whether you're remodeling your kitchen or bathroom or just looking for a durable flooring option for your basement, ceramic tile can outlast most other products if it's well-maintained. Some types of ceramic tile require more care than others; if you chip a tile, it can be replaced. - If you see a ceramic tile with a sheen, it's probably a glazed ceramic tile. Glazed ceramic tiles feature a glasslike glaze made from minerals, and the glaze is typically stained to create the tile color. Glazed tiles come in a wide range of colors and sizes, and glazes are usually available in at least three different finishes, including matte, semigloss, and high gloss. Glazed tiles are easy to clean and are frequently used on walls instead of floors due to their slick surface.
- A dense and hard material, unglazed ceramic tiles feature a wide variety of textures and surface treatments, which help to create a slip-resistant surface. Typically used outside the home, unglazed tiles are more prone to staining than glazed tiles. Whether you use unglazed tiles inside or outside, seal them before use to prevent possible staining or damage.
- To add a little detail to your walls or floors, use mosaic tile. Mosaic tiles typically come in sheets and are available in glazed, unglazed, and porcelain styles. Sheets can have a mosaic design already created, or you can purchase multiple single color sheets and create your own design. Mosaic tiles come in a wide variety of sizes, but tiles are typically smaller, ranging in size from around one-half inch to two inches across.
