How to Ban Soft Drinks in Schools
- 1). Make an announcement at your next PTA meeting. An announcement can help you find other parents and teachers within the school who would also like to ban soft drinks. Your efforts will be taken more seriously by the school if you have a large group behind you.
- 2). Get local pediatricians involved. Local pediatricians can help you explain the possible damaging health effects of soft drinks in school, including childhood obesity and the serious medical conditions that can result from it.
- 3). Open up a dialogue with the school administrators and board members. Once you have enough people behind you, the administrators and school board should be brought in. Make it clear that the parents, educators and pediatricians of your community want a soft drink ban within the school system.
- 4). Start a petition. If you can't get the school board's attention, start a petition and find people throughout the community to sign it. Send out the people involved in your cause into the community to get as many signatures as possible. Once you get a few thousand, contact your local news organization to get some press on the issue and to force the school board and administrators to take notice.
- 5). Start a committee to determine the nutritional content of the food and drinks being given to your children at school. By analyzing all of the food and beverage options, not just the soft drinks, the school board and administrators will be more likely to listen to your concerns. When presenting the findings of the committee, emphasize the negative health effects of soft drinks and be sure to include the opinions of experts, such as local pediatricians.
