Shouting, Hooting, and Howling
SHOUTING: The newest member of the "Joe Wilson Intemperate Eruption Club" turns out to be a conservative member of Congress from the great state of Texas, Republican Randy Neugebauer.
His was the voice heard during Bart Stupak's apologia in the well of the House of Representatives as Stupak tried to defend his disgraceful abandonment of his principles. In the midst of his explanation of why he chose to vote against his own amendment to the Obamacare bill supporting the right to life of the preborn, Neugebauer shouted out, "Baby killer!"
Now he says he was misquoted out of context and "In the heat and emotion of the debate, I exclaimed the phrase 'it's a baby killer' in reference to the agreement reached by the Democratic leadership:" [http://bit.ly/9WfMer]
Either the two word or the four word term serves as a fitting expletive for both Stupak and the Obamacare bill even if the president has pledged to issue a toothless executive order prohibiting the use of federal funds for aborting babies.
However, after the emotional sturm und drang of the night before, Neugebauer chose a tactical language retreat rather than be accused of hurling an indecorous ad hominem attack on a fellow congressman.
I have news for Rep. Neugebauer: Baloney! You didn't fool anyone by your efforts to cover your butt.
You did shout, "Baby killer!" at Stupak. It would have been far more honorable and far less wimpy to stand by your guns. Joe Wilson didn't try to suggest he really shouted at Obama, "You lie, abed each night!"
HOOTING: Few would call Ann Coulter a studied practitioner of the decorous arts or of wimpiness but to say she peddles venomous hatred and violence is way over the top.
Nevertheless, that's precisely what some are saying in Canada where Coulter was invited to speak at the University of Western Ontario. Two conservative student members of the Campus Coalition for Democracy extended the invitation which was immediately met with loud protests.
Local liberal hooter, Megan Walker, complained that "She's venomous... She crosses the line and promotes hatred and violence" and based that charge on various statements the American has made.
One quotation Walker cited is actually very darkly droll.
Asked to condemn last year's murder of abortionist George Tiller she responded in abortionist language: "I don't really like to think of it as a murder. It was terminating Tiller in the 203rd trimester... I am personally opposed to shooting abortionists, but I don't want to impose my moral values on others."
What's not mentioned by Canadian protestors is the typical campus receptions accorded to conservative American speakers, including Coulter, where they have been pelted with food products and where their entrance was blocked.
So much for freedom of speech.
Liberals have no fundamental confidence in their belief systems and find it much more convenient to refuse a forum to conservatives or hoot them off the stage than to attempt to refute the validity of their arguments.
Not one to be intimidated by wussy academics, Coulter has filed a grievance with the Canadian Civil Rights Commission contending she has been the victim of a hate crime: [http://bit.ly/ddMvvG]
You go, Annie!
HOWLING: Unlike Coulter's Canadian experience, there's little argument about squelching howling canines which is not to suggest that some localities won't try to end the practice of dogs talking, as in barking.
The good citizens of Piscataway, New Jersey have hit upon a plan-forbidding barking 24/7 since its previous 8 PM to 8 AM anti-barking ordnance had fallen upon deaf canine ears.
"The ordinance was expanded to include round-the-clock complaints because the town got about 400 animal noise complaints last year" [http://bit.ly/9JPzDr]
Violators of the new rule can be hit with fines although it's uncertain whether Fido or his owner has to cough up the money.
When one dumb scheme fails, why not institute a dumber initiative? What's next? An ordinance prohibiting babies from crying, birds from singing, car engines from making noise?
The Piscatawayan town fathers and mothers must be liberals. How else to explain such stupid ordinances?
