How to Water Fuchsia

46

    Indoor Watering

    • 1). Set the flowerpots in an area that receives bright, indirect sunlight. A location near an east or south facing window provides enough light and prevents over-drying of the soil.

    • 2). Stick your finger in the soil once a week. Water the pot when the top inch of soil feels dry.

    • 3). Water at the base of the plant until the water begins to drain from the drainage holes in the bottom of the plant. Empty the collected water from the drip tray under the pot after each watering.

    • 4). Taper off watering in late fall as blooming completes. Gradually extend the period between each watering until the plant dies back and goes dormant. Continue to water once monthly throughout winter, providing just enough water to prevent the soil from drying out completely.

    Outdoor Watering

    • 1). Plant fuchsias in a garden bed that receives morning light and afternoon shade. Areas protected from high winds are preferable. Too much sunlight burns the plant, inhibits blooming and dries out the soil more quickly.

    • 2). Spread a 2-inch layer of mulch around the base of the plants in spring when the soil begins to warm. The mulch helps retain moisture in the soil and prevents it from drying out quickly from rapid evaporation.

    • 3). Water the fuchsias when the top inch of soil begins to dry out. Once weekly watering is usually sufficient though they may require more water during hot weather. Provide enough irrigation to moisten the top 6 inches of soil every time you water.

    • 4). Reduce watering in late fall as the plants begin to die back. Lightly moisten the soil throughout winter when the ground isn't frozen to prevent it from drying out completely.
