How to Play the Siku
- 1). Decide who will play the ira pipes and who will play the arca pipes.
- 2). Hold the siku vertically with the largest pipe on your right and the smallest pipe on your left. To play, you will blow across the top of each open pipe rather than into them. Sit next to your partner and start with the arca playing her largest pipe and then the ira playing his largest pipe, alternating along the rest of the scale. This style is known as hocketing.
- 3). Experiment to learn how to play "Mary Had a Little Lamb" with your partner, starting with the ira's pipe number 3.
- 4). Try reading the music for "Mary Had a Little Lamb," which can be found in the Resources below. The rhythm is notated the same as in any other music, while the pitches are notated just as they are on the pipes, with circled numbers corresponding to the ira pipes and numbers that are not circled to the arca pipes.
- 5). Try reading more music as you become more skilled. There is a plethora of music available from your local music store or even from many sources on the Internet (check Resources below). For more difficult pieces, you may need to clap out the rhythm before you actually play through them.
