How to Make Orchids Out of Fondant

    • 1). Refer to a photo of an orchid for guidance while you work.

    • 2). Roll the fondant with a small rolling pin. It should be thin enough to mold easily but thick enough that it does not fall apart when handled.

    • 3). Cut five petal shapes from the fondant. You can use orchid-shaped cutters or a free-hand cutting tool like a knife. Cut the shape to resemble a football, if you are working free-hand. Make an elongated, tapered oval that is widest in the middle.

    • 4). Press the petals together in a star shape, with a common center point from which the petals radiate.

    • 5). Form a small, solid, conical shape to represent the center of the flower. It should be about half as long as the petals.

    • 6). Press the cone into the center of the flower, with the broad end down.

    • 7). Cut a ruffled petal shape. This petal should be slightly larger than the previous petals. Cut a teardrop shape with a stem shape radiating from the broad end of the teardrop, if you are cutting free-hand. Trim the pointed top of the teardrop to have a scalloped edge.

    • 8). Place the ruffled petal around the cone in the center of the bloom. Wrap it loosely around the center so that the center of the flower resembles a calla lily.

    • 9). Shape the five outer petals upwards to give the bloom shape.

Pinch the edges of all six petals lightly to thin the ends and dimple the edges. There is a fondant-shaping tool that resembles a small metal ball on the end of a stick, which professional decorators use to shape the edges of flower petals, to give them realistic texture.

Paint the orchid with edible paint to bring it to life. The center should be yellow. The petals may be white, purple, pink, green or red or some combination of those colors. Often colors are darker toward the center of the bloom. Many colorful orchid petals are actually white around their outer edges.

Add final painted details to the petals, as desired. Orchids often have dots or subtle striations throughout their petals.
