How to Crate Train a Pit Bull

21
    • 1). Invest in a durable crate that is big enough for your pit bull to lay down, stand up and turn around comfortably. Do not, however, buy a crate that is too large because your pit bull may relieve itself in the crate if there is too much space. Install a large water bottle inside the crate so your pit bull can get a drink without spilling water.

    • 2). Entice your pit bull to walk into its new crate by placing a pillow and blanket inside. Provide plenty of durable toys for your pit bull to play with and chew on while confined. Do not force your pit bull to go into the crate.

    • 3). Toss a few dog treats inside the crate. Close the crate door and lock your pit bull in only after it has become accustomed to laying down and relaxing in the crate.

    • 4). Teach your pit bull the crate command by pointing and telling it, "Go to bed." Pit bulls generally are an obedient breed if you have their respect. However, if your pit bull is headstrong, toss a treat in the crate until it learns and obeys the command.

    • 5). Develop a routine; let your pit bull out of the crate and go straight outside. A crate is an effective aid for housebreaking. Allow your pit bull some time to exercise after a night of confinement in the crate; pit bulls with too much pent up energy can develop behavior problems and bad habits.

    • 6). Feed your pit bull inside the crate if you need a way to prevent two dogs from fighting over food. Give bones or other treats to your pit bull inside the crate to minimize the chance of guarding behavior.
