How to Get a Driving License in the U.K.
- 1). Complete the D1 application for your provisional license. This application form is available from your local post office. If you have a U.K. passport and a debit or credit card, you can also apply through the Directgov website (see Resources).
- 2). Pay the processing fee. Submit the application and (if you don't have a U.K. passport) one passport-sized photo to the DVLA. You'll receive your provisional license in the mail.
- 3). Book both of your driving tests. This includes the theory test and the practical exam. Tests can be booked online (see Resources) by calling +44-870-010-1372 or by filling out and returning Driving Standards Agency forms DL26 and TT26. Once you pass both tests, you'll receive a pass certificate indicating you're eligible for a full U.K. driving license.
- 4). Exchange your pass certificate for a full U.K. driving license---this must be done within two years of receiving your certificate. Submit a fresh D1 form, your pass certificate, your provisional license and evidence of your identity, such as a current U.K. passport to the DVLA/DVA to receive a full U.K. license.
