Signs & Symptoms of UTI in Men
- Your urinary system includes your kidneys, ureters (tubes carrying urine to your bladder), bladder and urethra (tube that empties urine from your bladder). A urinary tract infection--usually caused by bacteria from your colon--occurs when you develop an infection in your urethra or bladder.
- You may not experience any symptoms, but common signs of a urinary tract infection in men can include burning during urination, cloudy urine, bloody or foul-smelling urine and excessive fatigue.
- If you experience a fever with other UTI symptoms, as well as nausea and vomiting, you may have developed a kidney infection, a serious complication that occurs when your UTI travels up your ureters to infect your kidneys.
- According to the National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse, your doctor typically will test a sample of your urine for the presence of blood and bacteria to diagnose a UTI.
- According to the Mayo Clinic, treatment for your UTI symptoms varies depending on your health and the type of bacteria causing your infection; options include antibiotics, such as amoxicillin and levofloxacin.
