Bamboo flooring is similar in durability and appearance to hardwood. Inside Woodworking states that it has a rejuvenating cycle of 5 years, which makes it much faster from planting to harvest than soft wood. When choosing bamboo flooring, some tips will allow you to keep it looking as good as it did when you laid it.

    Shade the Floor

    • Intense, direct sunlight causes bamboo flooring to acquire a discolored appearance. If strong sunlight hits the floor of the bamboo regularly, cover the window with net curtains, blinds or screens, which dilutes the sunlight and allows the bamboo floor to keep its stain or natural color.

    Move the Furniture

    • Every few years, move your furniture around the room to spread out the pressure throughout the room and prevent dents and hollows from appearing where the furniture sat. This also has the advantage of allowing the floor to age at an equal rate as it exposes covered areas of the floor to light and air.

    Use Protective Pads

    • Place felt protective pads underneath all of the furniture. These pads help alleviate the pressure underneath the furniture and distribute it a little better, which prevents deep dents from digging into the bamboo floor. Similarly, limit the amount of walking that you do on hardwood floors while wearing high heels. Like furniture feet, high heels focus pressure on one small part of the floor, causing tiny dents.

    Keep Grit Away

    • Bamboo floors are slightly prone to scratching. Prevent deep scratches by sweeping the floor regularly with a soft-bristled broom to prevent tiny particles of dust from scraping against the floor as you walk and causing scratches. Provide a mat at the entrance of the house so that guests can wipe their feet.

    Wipe Quickly

    • Because bamboo is a porous grass, it absorbs stains quickly. Use a damp cloth to wipe up any spills immediately to prevent the spill from soaking into the wood. After wiping up the spill, dry the floor with a clean rag because water soaking into the bamboo flooring can cause the boards to swell.
