- 1). Begin thinking about basic flower ideas for your wedding. Choose possible flower colors you would like to have and write them down. As colors vary by season, you may not be able to find particular hues during specific months. Do research online to find color combinations that are pleasing to you. Think about the size of the bouquet you would like. A good rule of thumb is to have the bouquet mirror your wedding dress in size and shape, as this will create balance and harmony. Avoid choosing flowers that will overwhelm your dress or appear too small. If you have an idea about what type of flowers you would like, create a list that you can take to the florist. If you find inspiration from magazine photos, tear the pages out so that you can show your florist your ideas.
- 2). Create a budget for your flowers and stick to it. Flowers come in a wide range of prices, so it is possible to create arrangements within your price limit.
- 3). Research florists in your area and schedule consultations. Keep in mind that it may take several appointments at various florists before you find the best fit for your budget, ideas and timeline. Florists book quickly, as much as a year in advance. Many only have a limited number of weddings they can do every weekend, so it is important to begin looking well ahead of time.
- 4). Bring your lists, any inspirational photos, a photo of your wedding dress and your budget to your interview with the florist in order to share your ideas and concerns. Before signing a contract with your florist, make sure that he or she is attentive, professional, understanding and creative.
- 5). Schedule at least two appointments with your florist between your initial meeting and the wedding. These appointments allow you to finalize any small details and keep tabs on the arrangements you have ordered.
