How to Seal a Leaking Pipe Fitting
- 1). Turn off the water supply at the main shutoff valve if working on CPVC or copper pipe. If working on PVC/ABS sewer pipe, do not use the sewer line until the putty is applied to the pipe and fully cured. Remove all dirt, grease or oil from around the pipe fracture area. Use a steel brush to create light abrasions on the pipe surface around the fracture to help the putty bond to the surface.
- 2). Cut the required amount of putty from its tube using a utility knife. Knead and roll the putty in your hands until it becomes one uniform color. Apply the putty after kneading on top of the pipe crack, covering 1/2 inch of the pipe surface in every direction of the crack. Apply the putty within 2 minutes of finishing kneading.
- 3). Wet your fingertips to smooth out the putty while it is curing. The putty will fully cure after 3 hours. Clean your hands with hot water and soap immediately after applying and smoothing out the putty.
