How Do I Fix a Modulator on a Broken Chrysler CD Player?

28

    Remove the CD Module

    • 1). Use a screwdriver to remove the faceplate circuit board and remove the CD module. Have your car manual handy because depending on what model you own and the year you purchased your car, disassembly may vary.

Once you remove the outer faceplate using screwdrivers, you should be able to see the CD player. To remove it, use long nose pliers to twist three metal tabs or use a screwdriver to remove screws that are holding on the faceplate. Newer models will have screws and older models will have tabs. These screws or tabs should be to the bottom right and left of the CD player and the last one will be at the top left of the system. The circuit board will be attached to the rest of the deck by a small ribbon cable. Do not remove the cable.

    • 2). Use a screwdriver to remove the screws located to the top right and left of the CD player. There should now be only one screw on top holding in the CD module at the back of the deck by the connectors. Remove it. Then, lift the module upward. Be careful not to tug too hard at the ribbon that is still attached. If you have to unplug the ribbon, do it very carefully. Otherwise, grab a board for you to work on, and then set the module on its side with the CD slot facing to the right. Remove the two top screws holding on the CD module's PCB, and loosen the two bottom ones so you can access the laser power pot on the CD sled.

    • 3). Pay careful attention when making adjustments to the CD module. If you make too much of an adjustment, the CD player may not read any CDs. Because of this, you may want to use a marker to mark how much you turn the screw for adjustment. Before you make any adjustments, use a marker to mark where the original was set. You may want to use a red marker to differentiate.

    • 4). Turn the laser power pot clockwise, a 16th of a turn, if the deck currently won't read any CDs. Then test. If it does not work, then set the pot back to the original setting and do a slightly larger turn. Then test. If that doesn't work, then set it back to its original setting and try turning it a 16th of an inch counterclockwise.

If the deck will read normal CDs but not CDRs, turn the pot a 16th of an inch clockwise. Then test. This will not fix error messages on CDRs. There is nothing you can fix on the modulator that will change that.

    • 5). Replace the CD to test any tweaks on the CD module. Make sure to replace all the screws or tabs and the faceplate before you test a CD. If you are still having problems with the CD player, see a professional.
