How to Make a Sub Enclosure
- 1). Measure the length, width and height of the area you would like to mount the sub enclosure.
- 2). Measure the diameter and depth of your subwoofer. Add two inches to the diameter and depth measurements to get the minimum size you can make your subwoofer enclosure.
- 3). Calculate the interior volume of your box by subtracting two times the width of the MDF from each dimension and then multiplying the length by the width by the height. Compare this volume to the manufacturer's recommended volume range for the subwoofer. Manufacturers usually write this on the subwoofer box or in the documentation. Adjust the length, width and height until the subwoofer will fit in your desired mounting location and fits within the recommended range for the subwoofer.
- 4). Cut the pieces out of the MDF with the jigsaw. Cut out a second piece for the front. The second piece will help keep the subwoofer supported. Draw the outline of the subwoofer on the front pieces and cut out the hole. Drill through a point on the edge of the hole and use it to start the jigsaw.
- 5). Cut a hole in the back piece for the terminal cup using the same method as above.
- 6). Assemble the box using the wood glue and the screws to hold the sides together. Screw the larger sides into the smaller sides as this gives the box more strength. Caulk the inside with the silicone caulk. This helps seal the box and give it some extra strength.
- 7). Mount the terminal cup in its space in the back panel by screwing it into place. Attach speaker wire to the terminals on the inside.
- 8). Attach the speaker wire to the back of the sub and mount the sub in the enclosure with screws. Use the non-hardening caulk to seal around the edge of the subwoofer.
- 9). Mount the subwoofer in the space of your choice.
