Significance

This can be a huge plus for the user and his family members who may struggle to transfer him out of a chair and into the car. In addition, the wheelchair must then be folded and lifted into the back seat or trunk of the car, and wheelchairs can be quite large and heavy. Having a vehicle where the wheelchair can roll right in saves time, work and energy for all involved. Models that allow the wheelchair user to get behind the steering wheel give the person with the disability the chance to drive themselves and be more independent.

  You can buy a minivan such as the one shown at the top of the page, or you can buy smaller cars. There are accessible SUVs and full size vans as well. The size you buy depends on the size of the wheelchair that needs to go into the vehicle, the comfort level of the driver, how many passengers need to fit in the vehicle and the amount you want to spend. There are almost no limits to the type of car you can buy.

  How the wheelchair enters differs among wheelchair accessible vehicles. Side options like in the minivan at the top of the page are available, while rear entry vehicles like the one shown here are a good choice as they allow the user to park anywhere without the need for extra room on the side for the wheelchair and lift. However, many rear entry vehicles do not allow the wheelchair to roll up into the steering wheel, which is an important option if the wheelchair user will be driving. Some vehicles, meanwhile, have a more sporty look, and others have a luxury car feel, which is strictly a personal choice.
  
  

Features

  Just as with non-wheelchair accessible cars, there are many styles and features to choose from. Your vehicle can come in a variety of colors and include special options such as spoilers, chrome exhaust, custom wheels and graphics. Ramps can either fold up into the vehicle or slide flat into the floor under the floorboards, leaving them unseen when not in use. Most models work with a push of a button that opens the door and releases the lift. Another button lifts the wheelchair into the car and then folds the lift. Remote keyless entry and vehicle starters are also options. For the driver, every control needed can be made for the hands, including the brake and gas pedals.

  Wheelchair accessible vehicles vary in price. You can buy a brand-new vehicle or many dealers offer used options. Used minivans and full vans can run from $16,000 to over $40,000. New models start around $30,000 and can go over $60,000. Check with the national organization that deals with your specific disability to see if they offer help with financing.
