Homemade Ice Fishing Shelter
- The most simple type of portable ice fishing shelter resembles the blanket tent you likely built as a child. With a tarp for insulation and a simple plywood frame inside, this type of ice fishing shelter has the advantage of being lightweight, portable and inexpensive to build.
You can also build a homemade tarp shelter that accommodates a pair of benches for sitting. This style is boxy, with plywood or conduit arching over and between the two benches in a "C" shape, and either tarp or canvas tacked to the outside. A box-style ice fishing shelter holds a large number of people comfortably---larger versions can even accommodate sleeping (see Resources). - For most types of portable shelters, you will need plywood and nails to construct the frame. You can also use conduit pipe or copper tubing, but avoid PVC as it gets brittle in cold temperatures. You will need canvas or tarp for the exterior and a staple gun to secure it. Also consider whether you will want to build or buy a cover or bag to store your portable shelter in during the off season. Think about how you will be transporting your portable fishing shelter. A small sled might make sense if you'll be dragging it across the ice, while larger shelters might offer limited mobility.
- When designing an ice fishing shelter, keep in mind how many people will likely be using the shelter and what sort of equipment and food you'll bring along. A larger shelter makes sense; one with benches is ideal if you've got children or elderly ice fishers. Make sure your shelter is easy to transport so that you can move it to other fishing spots. If you need to move it across the ice once it's set up, will you be able to?
Don't be afraid to ask other ice fishers about their portable fishing shelters. Many of them will be glad to share their materials and inspiration; some might even offer to share their plans.
