3D TV Frustrating and Fascinating at the Same Time?

34
In the last two years 3D TV has been evolving ever more. But whereas it is a pleasure to watch for most people others find it rather disturbing. How can these completely opposite experiences be explained? An attempt to clarify:

3-dimensional entertainment, like movies, games or pictures, is mainly supposed to take the experience to the next level. It is meant to suck you in the story, the movie or the game. When the first movies and later the first games came on the market, the special effects and graphics were just basic, as you might know from black and white movies and games like the classics "Pong" or "Pacman". But with advancing technology the developer's and film makers' possibilities evolved, taking graphics and special effects to a higher level.

Today we have almost reached the point where we can create every world and everything we could possibly imagine with computer simulations. The creating of special effects is just a matter of 3D modeling.
Another development has been the increasing resolution of TV screens. The logical next step would be 3D. Actually 3D has already been around for a while, and the technology that is now used to create 3D moving pictures is nothing more than a highly improved version of the old technology used for stereoscopic 3D films, so it's more than a rebirth than a revolution.

But what used to be just a little gimmick with red and green glasses for 3D comics has now grown to a natural 3D experience. Thus, every big film studio is now producing 3D versions of its movies. They all try to jump on board of the big 3-dimensional entertainment train. There is just one problem: 3D is supposed to enhance the movie experience, but under time pressure the 3D effects are often so terrible they actually make enjoying the film impossible.

This is a main reason many people don't like 3D. In my opinion it could be a really positive experience, if you don't go in with the expectation of seeing tons of creatures leaping out of the screen, but rather just let 3D provide more depth and reality to the movie. If film makers would use 3D in this way too, you could actually feel more connected to the movie and its characters

The main reasons people have a negative opinion of 3D are not the cost or the fact that you have to were shutter glasses, but they are the tons of loveless made 3D productions, which just show effect because of the effects, not because they improve the story. Even if many criticized the story of James Cameron's Avatar, the latter at least understood how to use 3D to create a beautiful world with more realistic effects. That is what 3D effects have to become to gain more popularity in the future, and become the next thing after color TV and Full HD.
