What to Put in Hummingbird Feeders
There are several types of hummingbird feeders made from ceramic, glass or plastic material designed to hold liquid. The feeders may or may not have a perch for the hummingbird to sit on while sipping the liquid.- Hummingbirds expend energy quickly and require a boost from flower nectar to recharge. To supplement natural flower nectar, make homemade sugar water or use a pre-packaged mix from a pet store.
- Prepare the sugar water by combining one part regular white sugar to four parts of spring or tap water.
- Fill the hummingbird feeder every two to three days with the sugar water mixture. Refrigerate remaining liquid for no more than two weeks.
- Use only white cane sugar when making the sugar water. Do not substitute with honey, molasses, artificial sweeteners or brown sugar.
