How to Disconnect a Shower Faucet
- 1). Turn off the water to the shower at the dedicated shut-off valve or shut off the water to the house, whichever is applicable.
- 2). Turn the shower faucet on and let any water in the line drain out. Wait until the water stops dripping out of the faucet before continuing.
- 3). Place towels on the floor of the shower, with one directly over the drain. This will prevent any parts from accidentally falling in the drain as well as protect your shower floor from tools that may slip from your hands.
- 4). Insert the tip of a flathead screwdriver between the shower wall and the cap on the stem of the faucet. Twist the flathead screwdriver several times, breaking the cap away from the wall, exposing the mounting screw.
- 5). Unfasten the mounting screw with a Phillips screwdriver or hex wrench. Some shower faucets will not have such a screw; in this case, skip to the next step.
- 6). Wrap a towel around the old shower faucet and grasp it tightly with pliers or a pipe wrench. Turn the faucet counterclockwise, unfastening it from the water pipe protruding from the shower wall.
- 7). Clean the end of the water pipe with steel wool, getting any adhesive or tape off the threads. You can now wrap thread seal tape around the pipe and connect the new shower faucet. After the new faucet is installed, remove the tools and parts as well as the towels and turn the water supply back on.
