    Wired Router

    • 1). Plug an Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on the rear of your cable modem, if using a modem. Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into the port on the rear of the router labeled "Internet" or "Input."

    • 2). Plug a second Ethernet cable into one of the four Ethernet ports on the rear of the router, labeled "1-4."

    • 3). Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on your computer's networking adapter. The networking adapter is located on the rear of desktop computers and on the rear or side of laptop computers.

    • 4). Open the "Start" menu on your computer and click "Control Panel."

    • 5). Click "Network and Internet" from within the Control Panel window and then select "Network and Sharing Center."

    • 6). Click "Manage Network Connections" or "Change Adapter Settings" and then right click on your Ethernet adapter, which is labeled "Local Area Connection." Click "Enable" if it appears, to enable the connection. If the word "Disable" appears, close the window, because the connection already is active.

    Wireless Router

    • 1). Plug an Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on the rear of your cable modem, if using a modem. Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into the port on the rear of the router labeled "Internet" or "Input."

    • 2). Click the "Connect to a Network" icon, located on your task bar, to the left of the clock. The icon has an image of five white bars, ascending in height.

    • 3). Click the name of your wireless network from the list and then click "Connect."

    • 4). Enter the network key if prompted and then click "Connect" to connect to the network.
