Coaching Tip - Bring the Crew Together

12
In order to have a successful crew, a coach must foster an environment to that brings the athletes together into a tight knit group.
The easiest way to do this is to get everyone in the habit of working hard.
This is done by training and conditioning work done after drills and throwing exercises.
The type of activity is really secondary.
Focus on activities that have a lower potential for injury, but require more intensity, and gets the group working together.
There is nothing better to develop group chemistry than 20-40 minutes of intense activity every day after practice.
Games like ultimate Frisbee or speedball are great activities.
If space and/or equipment is limited then just a simple circuit of different body weight activities work great as well.
I have found as a younger coach that it is great for my rapport with the athletes that I do about a quarter of the work that I ask the athletes to do.
Now I realize that there will come a day when I can no longer do this effectively, but this allows the athletes to see that I am willing to do anything that I ask them to do, while still being able to observe and critique.
It also gives me a feel for how hard the athletes are actually working.
I try to avoid throwing or demonstrations with implements, as I don't want to project my bad habits onto the athletes not to mention the fact that I don't want to take up any of their valuable circle time.
It is important that the athletes see good visual cues, so if a demonstration is needed I generally do it at a slower speed and without an implement focusing on doing the exercise in a way that I would expect them to accomplish it.
It is important to realize that as a coach you are always transmitting messages to your athletes.
It is important to be conscious of your actions and realize exactly what messages you are sending.
