How to Buy Backpackers Insurance

28
Backpacking is an exciting and challenging activity that can be a life changing experience in many ways.
But as with any other form of travelling you need to make sure you're covered by the right insurance policy before you go.
Policies designed specifically for backpackers are routinely available now and they aren't too hard to find.
The best place to start your search is via an online search engine.
Simply typing in the words 'backpackers insurance' will bring up thousands of results which you can then start to look through.
Another good way of finding the best policy is to go to a price comparison site, which will compare lots of policies to find the cheapest.
Bear in mind that the cheapest isn't always the best though.
One key point to consider is whether you have any special needs or requirements that you need to declare.
For example, do you have an ongoing medical condition that you need to inform your insurance company about? If you keep it quiet to get a cheaper policy and you need treatment while you are travelling you won't be covered, so it can be an expensive corner to try and cut.
Depending on your needs a standard backpacker policy may not be enough.
You may have to buy additional cover or a more specialist policy from another provider.
Always make sure all your needs are covered and don't try to save money by getting less cover than you actually need.
You also need to consider where in the world you will be travelling to.
Different policies will cover different destinations, so if there's a chance you will visit a neighbouring country to the one you will be spending virtually all your time in, then make sure you get cover for it just in case.
The countries you visit will probably affect the final price you will pay, so don't forget to shop around before laying down your money.
It's wise to remember that your needs will be different when you are going to spend months abroad than they would be for a two week summer holiday.
So don't book insurance like you would for a holiday - consider what your needs will be for the longer period of time and buy exactly what you need to have peace of mind the whole time you are away.
