How to Tile a Walk-Out Shower
- 1). Measure across the top of the walk-out shower’s back wall and mark the middle if the shower has three solid walls. Measure along the bottom of the back wall and mark the middle. Lay a flat board between the two marks and draw a line down the wall’s center.
- 2). Spread thinset mortar around the middle line at the top of the back wall. Lay the first tiles on either side of the middle mark along the top of the wall and work your way outward to the edges of the wall, cutting the edge tiles down with a tile saw if necessary. Work your way down the back wall, installing tiles from the center line outward.
- 3). Start on the front edges of the walk-out shower’s side walls, or at the front edges of the walls if the shower has only two solid walls. Lay the first tile at the top front corner and work your way back toward the back side of the wall, cutting the back tile down as necessary. Repeat the same front-to-back process for subsequent rows of tiles.
- 4). Measure across the back of the shower floor and mark the middle and measure across the front and mark the middle. Begin laying floor tiles from the center line of the front edge of the shower floor and out toward the edges. Work backward toward the interior wall to keep cut tiles at the back and edges of the floor.
- 5). Let the newly installed tile dry for approximately 24 hours before applying grout to the spaces in between tiles with a float. Remove any grout from tile tops with a rag.
- 6). Line the edges of the walk-out shower tile job, such as the front of the shower floor where it meets the walking floor of the bathroom and the top of the tile job where it meets the wall with caulk. Apply caulk around shower fixtures, such as the floor drain and showerhead, as well.
