Fire Prevention Day On 9th October
The theme of the National Fire Prevention Day changes every year. The Fire Prevention Day 2012 week will be celebrated from October 7 through October 13. The theme of the this years Fire Prevention Day celebrated on 9th October is Have 2 Ways Out.
Only a few of us might be aware that every year 9th of October is celebrated throughout the world as Fire prevention day. Actually everybody must be aware of such an important day but unfortunately we are not giving more importance to such topics. Most of the times we take such topic lightly unless and until a situation of emergency arises.
First of all we must know exactly, what is the background behind celebrating this day. Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragedy of 1871 which killed around 250 people, left more than 100,000 homeless, and a huge damage and lose to properties around. The fire which began on October 8 due to a small negligence continued and did most of its damage on October 9 which gutted the whole city. The first National Fire Prevention Day proclamation was done in 1920, by President Woodrow Wilson. Since 1922, Fire Prevention Week is observed on the Sunday through Saturday period in which comes October 9. On the same day Americas biggest forest fire was recorded in North America killing around 2400 people. The great Peshtigo fire as it was recorded covered a devastating area of 2400 square miles.
We use fire for many of our day to day to requirements so it is a useful in one way but if shown negligence towards handling it there is no other dangerous thing than fire which destroys everything and leaves no chance to regret for our negligence. It is well said that prevention is always better than the aftermath cure. There are many causes of fire some natural and others manmade. We cannot control the causes of fire cent percent because most of the times they are accidental and without warning like the modern day short circuits. So in order to control the locations of fire we have to offer training to the people who are supposed to be present at that location. In offices we can train the employees by arranging fire fighting training and mass drills. We have to train the housewives and the general masses how to act and bring fire under control by using the media and other means of mass communication. We can even offer training to the school and college students that in case fire breaks out in their location what preventive and safety measures have to be taken.
Most important sector is the industrial sector in which such fire fighting sessions must be made compulsory. Because the fire which erupts in an industrial zone is very much difficult to control due to the existence of goods and material like chemicals, paper, rubber etc which boost the spreading of fire from one place to other. Some times the fire breaks out in one unit and destroys all the surrounding units.
