The History of HP Desktop Computers
- HP introduced its first desktop computer model, the HP-85, in 1980. The model was portable and marketed for the casual user or business professional. It featured a full keyboard, small screen and ROM operating system. Along with it, the company began selling an inexpensive laser printer.
- HP began marketing the Pavilion desktop specifically to home users. The model was widely successful and became an eventual market leader. HP introduced the HP Pavilion 5030 in 1995 with a CD ROM drive, speakers and online access. The Pavilion 2000 model was designed for sale in Japan but became popular in the United States as well, and it paved the way for future HP computer designs.
- HP became one of the first computer manufacturers to become environmentally friendly by signing a contract with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to create a line of personal computer products which do not waste electricity when not in use. HP then became an Energy Star qualified company. In 2003, HP invented a cooling system for its computers, to reduce the amount of energy used by PCs.
