How to Have Low Ping
- 1). Close any applications that may be using your bandwidth. This includes applications like your Internet browser, download managers and peer-to-peer file sharing programs like BitTorrent applications. These programs may be using your bandwidth to the extent that they increase your ping.
- 2). Filter the game servers or hosts by ping. Set the server browser to sort the results by ping from lowest to highest. Choose the game server with the lowest ping.
- 3). Find the lowest possible ping by connecting to the game servers that are closest to you. The closer the server is to you, the less distance the data must travel between your computer and the computer or server hosting the game. Less travel time reduces ping. Sometimes it can be difficult to find the location of a game server. Some games provide filter options that let you sort by location. If this is not available, read the server's name. Many times they have the city in which the server is located in the name.
- 4). Consider getting an Internet connection with a speed higher than you currently have. If you still get consistently high pings even after closing background applications and finding game servers close to you, it may be your connection itself causing the high ping.
- 5). Run virus and spyware scans on a regular basis. These malicious programs might be slowing your connection, giving you a higher ping.
