How to Handle Bullying Without Confrontation
- 1). Ignore the bully and leave the area. Avoid eye contact, but keep your head held high. Act as if you don't see or hear the person. Walk calmly toward a public place where friends, colleagues or people of authority can be found.
- 2). Divert the conversation. When the bully begins a verbal assault, as you walk away say phrases like, "I'm late for a meeting," "my friends are waiting for me" or "gotta go." Walk away calmly, but briskly.
- 3). Identify an exit or alternative location. As the bully approaches, look for places to head toward, such as your car, a crowd of people or a store.
- 4). Learn the bully's schedule. Make every effort to avoid situations where you and the bully will cross paths. If such meetups are unavoidable, pretend to be in an engaging conversation on your cell phone as you pass the bully or ask a friend or colleague to accompany you in areas where running into the bully can't be avoided.
