Choosing a Dog Name for Your New Puppy
After going through the process of choosing your new puppy and bringing him home, it is now time to choose a name.
What first seems like a fun thing to do often turns in to a difficult decision.
With just a little thought and planing you can come to the perfect name for your new best friend.
First consider the physical qualities of your new puppy.
Will the dog be a big dog or a small dog, does he have long floppy ears or short upright ears? You might want to reflect the color of the dog or a special feature like an underbite or wrinkly face.
Also consider what the dog will look like when he is fully grown.
A small new puppy might lead you to believe Snuggles would be a good name, but when he is a fully grown Rottweiler will the name still fit? If the dog is male or female do you want the name to reflect the gender of the dog.
Some dog owners prefer gender neutral names.
It is also not uncommon to give a name reflecting the opposite gender of the dog.
A male dog can quite easily be called princess if that is what your heart desires, no one will frown upon it, at the most some will think it is peculiar.
After making a list of all your dogs physical qualities now consider your personality.
If you are a football loving tough guy do you really want a dog called fluffy? Remember, you will find your self saying this name several times a day and many times you will have to yell out quite loudly to get your dogs attention when he is on the other side of the yard! Something silly or long might sound good at first but after calling your dog for the hundredth time you might wish you stuck to something short.
One or two syllables is best for naming your dog.
Narrow your choices down to two or three that you really like.
After you have your top three choices do a trial run with each name.
Use one name each day and see how it goes.
By the end of the third day you should have a good idea of what name you want to use.
If none of the names seemed quite right then simply try again.
The great thing about your new puppy is that no matter what you name your dog, he will always come running to the sound of your voice!
