How to Care for Mini Pink Phalaenopsis Orchid Roots

    • 1). Water the whole plant, including the roots, once a week. The plant prefers drier conditions, but should not be dried out. Place the plant in the sink and run gentle water over the plant until the soil is damp but not washed out.

    • 2). Fertilize the roots with a balanced orchid fertilizing formula every two weeks. This action ensures the health of the roots. Use the fertilizer after watering the plant because the roots are swollen and absorb nutrients better than drier roots.

    • 3). Re-pot the plant every two years. The plant is susceptible to root rot, so moving the plant every two years refreshes the soil for the roots. Use plastic pots as opposed to terra cotta pots; roots stick to terra cotta pots.

    • 4). Trim the roots only if desired for cosmetic reasons. Use a sterile straight razor blade and cut the roots, leaving 6 inches of root left attached to the plant. Some owners choose to do this due to shooting roots or roots that grow out of control.
