Diabetes and Children

14
All over the world cases of children with diabetes are on the increase.
It has been discovered that the diabetes that most kids suffer from is Type1 diabetes.
It has also been noted that the number of young adults and children that suffer from Type 2 diabetes is on the rise, with America being the country reporting the largest number of these cases.
This disease is said to infect very many children at a fast rate of 17 out of 100,000 kids being diagnosed with diabetes every single year.
The chances of any child suffering from diabetes used to be extremely low, however with bad diets that are one of the main causes of obesity, the statistics have been altered significantly.
The main causes of diabetes are not yet really understood, however it is widely speculated that genetic characteristics that are inherited cause the syndrome when triggered by a variety of certain factors to do with the environment such as, exercise or diet.
However, this theory has been debated on because some children that suffer from Type 1 diabetes do not have any family members that suffer from this condition.
Some of the symptoms that kids suffering from diabetes may exhibit are: weight loss, tiredness, thirst and frequent urination.
These symptoms are also exhibited by adults suffering from the same condition.
These signs should be looked out for in kids as they give early warning signs of diabetes which could be easily treated.
Other symptoms that are only specific to children that are suffering from diabetes are: a history of illnesses that cannot be explained and tummy aches that keep on recurring.
Usually what happens after the child gets a diagnosis is that the child is directed to a particular diabetes specialist.
The children would be under better care, if they get admitted at their hospital, as opposed to the GP.
The reason for this is because if the child is suffering from Type 1 diabetes, a huge number of islet cells (which produce insulin) have been destroyed and thus either produce small amounts of insulin that are insufficient or no insulin at all.
This can only mean that the child has to receive insulin treatment.
A care team that is specialized in diabetes treatment will plan a regimen that is best suited to the habits and individual requirements of the child.
In order to ensure that optimum amounts of insulin are administered to the patient, nocturnal levels are managed by administering a slow acting dose while insulin that is fast-acting will be administered during the day.
Insulin pumps are used in the initial period after the diagnosis, in administering insulin to children.
As children grow they will need to have levels of insulin that is administered to them increased.
As far as treating Type 2 diabetes goes, treatment in children depends to what extent the condition has progressed.
As a parent whose child is suffering from diabetes, some of the things that you need to take care of are: knowing delivery sites on which you ought to administer the injections, for instance, the thigh and the area above the abdomen.
You should familiarize yourself with the symptoms of diabetic acidosis and low blood sugar and also be careful to always monitor your child's blood sugar levels.
