Vermont Babysitting Laws
- There are currently no laws or regulations that are enforced by Vermont state or local police concerning age limits for babysitters. There are, however, in regard to private home care. Regulations and licenses are necessary in order to become a professionally licensed caregiver or start up a day care home or center in which a babysitter can care for multiple children.
- In Vermont, it is recommended that children ages 4 to 10 not be left with teens less than 13 years of age. For infant and toddler care, choosing an older sitter properly trained in child care is likely the better choice. Checking references that other local parents have gathered, and running a background check on adult caregivers is highly recommended.
- Those looking for more detailed regulations on becoming a licensed caregiver in Vermont can visit their Department for Children and Families website. For teenagers looking to upgrade their babysitting credentials, the Green River chapter of the American Red Cross offers specialized babysitter certification classes in first aid, professionalism and safe play.
