Resolution
Definition: Resolution has two meanings in 3D computer graphics:
Also Known As: Polycount
- Resolution as a broad term refers to the total number of pixels that make up a screen or image. Resolution is usually reported as width by height, 1920 x 1080 for example. The higher the resolution of an image the more detail it contains, and the larger it can be viewed/printed without any quality loss.
- The term is also used frequently by modelers to describe the density of polygons in a 3D model. A model with 300,000 polygons would be said to have higher resolution than a model with 30,000.
However, because the distribution of polygons on a 3D surface is rarely uniform, the total number of polygons in an object is sometimes a misleading measure of resolution. The goal of a 3D modeler is to increase polygonal resolution in areas of a model that need detail (like the face of a character model), and to decrease resolution where detail is unnecessary.
