Family Rollerblade Safety
- Make sure each family member has properly sized Rollerblades. Take each family member with you when purchasing Rollerblades, and be sure to fit them before purchase. According to Texas A&M, skates that are too big do not support the ankles and are more difficult for the user to control. Plus, it creates extra space behind the heel, which can be dangerous.
- Oregon State University reports that the most common type of inline skating injury is a head injury, which can be serious and even fatal. Make wearing a helmet a requirement every time your family straps on their roller blades. Helmets should fit snugly and rest an inch above the eyebrows. Make sure the helmet has chin straps as well. Choose colorful helmets to increase visibility and replace helmets as soon as they appear damaged or every five years.
- Make sure each family member has well-fitted wrist guards and elbow and knee pads. Wrist guards should fit snugly over the hands to prevent a broken wrist in a fall. Texas A&M recommends checking the fit of elbow and knee pads as well because pads that are too small can pop off, while pads that are too big will slide off.
- Before heading out to skate with your family, make sure each person knows the basics of Rollerblading. You should skate with your knees slightly bent to maintain balance. Make sure everyone knows how to stop, which can be the trickiest part of Rollerblading. If your family is new to this activity, consider taking a Rollerblading lesson to ensure everyone understands the basic techniques. Retail shops like sporting goods stores sometimes offer these classes.
- Find a safe place to Rollerblade. Stay on the sidewalk to avoid street traffic. You should skate on the right side of sidewalks and other paths, according to Oregon State. In addition, look for uneven pavement, rocks or pebbles that could trip a Rollerblader. Finding a safe, traffic-free area to skate will improve your family's Rollerblading experience.
