How to Install a Kenwood Equalizer

33
    • 1). Disconnect the negative battery cable (or grounding cable) from the vehicle's battery. The grounding cable is the black cable that connects the battery to the frame of the vehicle. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to loosen the bolt that holds the cable's clamp around the negative battery lead. Remove the clamp from the negative lead post.

    • 2). Remove the stereo from the dash of the vehicle. Removal procedures vary; consult your vehicle's owner's manual for specific instructions.

    • 3). Disconnect the wiring groups at the rear of the stereo. There are four groups of wires connected to the stereo (the antenna, the speakers, the amplifier, and the power supply).

    • 4). Connect the vehicles wiring to a wiring harness adapter. This will provide a uniform method of connection and make adding the Kenwood equalizer simple.

    • 5). Connect the outlets of the wiring harness adapter to the stereo.

    • 6). Connect the patch cables to the appropriately labeled outlets of the wiring harness adapter.

    • 7). Run the patch cables to the location of the equalizer. The equalizer can be placed in several locations throughout the vehicle. A common choice is the trunk of the car or behind the rear seats of a truck. Follow the path established by the speaker wires to the rear speakers. If an amplifier or powered-subwoofer is a part of the vehicles audio system, run the patch cables on a path opposite the power cables for the amp and sub. The power cables will cause interference if laid with the patch cables for the equalizer.

    • 8). Connect the patch cables to the outlets on the Kenwood equalizer. The patch cables will provide a power supply, a turn-on lead so that the equalizer can be turned on and off by the stereo, and signal connection.

    • 9). Reconnect the grounding cable to the vehicle's battery. Place the cable's clamp around the negative battery lead. Tighten the cable's bolt with a Phillips-head screwdriver. The bolt needs to be tightened enough so that the clamp cannot be moved around the lead-post by hand.
