How to Childproof an Exterior Door
- 1). Install two deadbolt locks. Place one at the standard height (near the door knob) and the other one about a foot from the top of the door.
- 2). Cover the door knob in a protective cover. These covers, which fit snugly over door knobs, create a larger surface that is harder for small hands to grip. Most door knob covers also require you to squeeze from both sides while turning, which is difficult for most young children to do.
- 3). Attach screen door hardware near the upper 12 to 24 inches of the screen door. This hardware usually consist of a hook-and-eye latch.
- 4). Install an upper chain lock in addition to a deadbolt lock. Place the chain lock about a foot lower than the top of the door.
- 5). Install a door alarm chime so that you hear a sound whenever the door opens. This is a secondary defense that may be helpful if one of your other precautions fails.
