Should a Couple Sleep in Two Single Beds?

27
However, many couples do sleep in separate beds for long periods of time from the beginning. In some extreme cases, some couples even live in different places for prolonged periods of time and without their relationship suffering any harm.

Although the word single bed implies that a single person is sleeping on it, this is simply semantics. Any couple can choose to sleep in two separate single beds.

Sleeping in two single beds is not the result of a previous discussion. Couples where the partners tend to be very independent will often prefer the two single beds solution. As a matter of fact, since many couples both members have a completely different timetable, they are practically condemned to sleep in different beds. Otherwise, the member of the couple who comes at night from work would be waking up the member of the couple who works between nine and five. This is a much more powerful source for misunderstandings than simply sleeping in different single beds.

Some couples go a step further and even sleep put the two single beds in two separate rooms, assuming space constrains allow it. Some people need absolute silence to sleep. As a matter of fact, they will only sleep deeply if they are alone in a room. This, as in the previous case above, is not a sign of relationship troubles nor is it a source of dispute. It can equally be a healthy step in your relationship.

Since every person needs their space, being in a committed relationship and sleeping in two separate single beds in two separate rooms is only a way of creating this private space for each member of the couple.

A further advantage of having two single beds is that each partner of the couple can choose which mattress he or she wants. As a matter of fact, it is almost impossible that the two partners weight exactly the same and are equally tall. The resulting problem is that each one of the partners will have to agree on a middle point when buying the mattress. Otherwise, one partner will have to cave in and sleep on a mattress that is two soft or two hard for him. Resulting back pains after several years of sleeping on such a mattress is only one of the many consequences of this.

We have only to wonder why so many couples do not choose this system.
