How to Make Newspaper Cones to Hold Food
- 1). Cut out enough 8-inch by 8-inch squares from the newspaper to match how many cones you'd like to make. Typical broadsheet newspapers are 12 inches from side to side and 12 inches from the top of the newspaper to the middle fold (where the paper folds in half). Cut out your squares from above and below the fold, so there are no creases in the squares.
- 2). Lay down one 8-inch square, so it looks like a diamond in front of you. Rip off four 1-inch pieces of tape for each square. Stick one end of each piece of tape on the edge of the table, so the other end of the tape hangs freely for easy grabbing.
- 3). Grab the right corner of the diamond with your right thumb and index finger. Pull the corner over the center of the diamond and stop when an imaginary straight line can be drawn from the top corner of the diamond down through the edge where you're holding the paper to the bottom of the diamond.
- 4). Do not form a crease. Keep the fold rounded on the right side.
- 5). Grab the left corner of the diamond with your left thumb and index finger. Pull the corner over just past the center of the diamond to create a cone shape with a tight point at the bottom. There will be a slight overhang of paper at the tip.
- 6). Position the cone so that you're holding the top corners together with one hand and the bottom tip of the cone is facing down. Grab one piece of tape and apply it to the tip of the cone to hold the paper in place and to reinforce the tip. Apply the other pieces of tape along the seam to secure the cone. Repeat the process with the remaining squares.
- 7). Allow family members to fill the cones with popcorn or other snacks. Slip in a piece of wax paper to surround the interior of the newspaper cone if the food is greasy. This will create a barrier so the newspaper doesn't absorb the oil from the food.
