Westchase Golf Club in Tampa, Florida
The golf course at the Westchase Golf Club in Tampa, Florida, is a tough, though visually stunning layout designed by Lloyd Clifton. The par 72 course plays some 6,700 yards from the back tees with a rating of 71.8 and a slope of 130. Along the way, the wide fairways meander through beautiful strands of natural wetlands, marshes, numerous lakes, stately palms, live oaks and stands of old growth pine trees.
Westchase is "one of the most beautiful public-access courses in the Tampa area,"
Water is in play on almost every hole. In fact, all four of the par 3 holes require a forced carry over water, and then there are the bunkers to contend with: all strategically placed, sometimes, so it seems with glee. The fairways are lush and nicely manicured; the greens are, for the most-part, large undulating and almost always tricky to read. And three sets of tees are provided - Blue, White and Red - to accommodate golfers of all levels of skill. Westchase is rated 4 Stars - Golf Digest Best Places to Play.
Westchase is a great golf course, perhaps one of the best in Florida; certainly a real joy to play, and play it you should. Put this one on your bucket list.
Fun Holes include the signature 212- yard 3rd hole, a par 3 over water. The 9th, a par 4 of 404 yards with water all along the right side of the fairway and a second shot over marshland to a smallish green that slopes from back to front. The 13th is a par 5 that plays some 505 yards with water in play all the way along the left side from tee to green; Your tee shot is over water to a wide landing area, but a wayward tee shot to the right will find trouble in the bunkers that guard the right side of the fairway; your second is to a much narrower section of the fairway, also guarded by water on the left and bunkers on the right; from their it's a shortish shot into the green is guarded left and by greenside bunkers.
The golf carts are equipped with a full color, state-of-the-art GPS system which provides accurate yardages and helpful Pro tips about how to play the individual holes. The clubhouse features the Westchase Grill and a full-service golf shop overlooking the spectacular lakeside 9th and 18th greens.
