We've talked about curating content and making money from your efforts before, and those two articles lay a strong foundation for what comes today.
First, we learned what curation is and how people are building their fortunes on this concept.
Then, we talked about *if* curation would work for you and how you can get started! Today we want to look at the big picture.
This is the process I use, and teach; it's a simple step-by-step business plan.
If you follow the steps you build a business.
If you skip a step you will likely lose profits.
There are six simple steps.
Let me cover each briefly today.
TOPIC
The first step in the process is to choose your topic.
You will be creating a web presence about this topic so that searchers can find you and so that your audience will have a place to call home.
If you do this well, your audience will want to visit frequently.
You will become a trusted resource for your readers.
First, you must identify your passion, in order to identify the niche from which you want to profit.
Please have that niche in mind as we move forward.
**A word about niches: I often suggest people follow their passion and make a business from that, and I've been asked *why*.
I have three reasons: If you are passionate: (1) You won't quit.
You'll look to solve problems, rather than how to get out of them.
(2) You will have natural knowledge about the topic.
This gives you a huge head start.
(3) You will like the customers you make.
You will have something in common, which helps you connect.
Very important!** If you are trying to make money with a topic that is foreign to you then you have none of these advantages.
MARKET
Once you have chosen a topic it's time to do some research into that market.
This simple process includes five easy steps, which will be covered in detail in my next article.
CONTENT
The curation business model is not about you being a great writer.
If you love to write, make videos, or create content that's great.
But it's not necessary.
Curation is about gathering great content.
Assembling together the best of the best and presenting it in a way that helps people who visit your site.
They visit, they find what they need, they like how you present it and then return.
Simple.
They won't care that you did or did not create the content.
They will care that you saved them time, helped get an answer they needed or helped solve a problem.
We will cover exactly how to do that in an upcoming article.
For now do this - if you have chosen the topic you want to curate, make a list of all the sites you already know of that deal with this subject, no digging necessary.
PUBLISH
The next step in the curation business model is to publish the content you have gathered.
This publishing can take many forms, including...
  • Books
  • Reports
  • Blogs
  • Squidoo Lenses
  • And many more
There are also sites like 'paper.
li' that specialize in helping you curate content.
Again, these will all be covered in depth as we travel through this series.
LIST
You've heard it all before, but it's still true (today, maybe more than ever)...
You need a mailing list of your own to really succeed online.
But the logic is immutable.
People who visit your site want to hear from you.
Email is the #1 way to do that.
  • They will want to know when you have new content.
  • They will want to communicate with you personally if you offer that.
  • And they will buy from you because they now know you, like you and trust you.
PROMOTION
Now for the best part - making money from all this work.
While there are MANY ways to do this, I will focus on three...
  • Your own promotions
  • Joint ventures with others
  • Ads on your site

Today is about seeing the big picture.
It's about taking the next step.
There you have it - six simple steps that can help you build a real online business.
  • A business that can support you and your family.
  • A business that earns profits every day even if you don't work that day.
  • A business with true book value; one that can be sold or passed on to your heirs.
This is a business model that can build such a business.
