How to Repaint a Table Top

12
    • 1). Load the sandpaper tightly onto the drum of the orbital sander by tucking it into the ends.

    • 2). Sand the surface of the table, moving the sander with the grain of the wood, to remove existing paint and varnish.

    • 3). Wipe the dust off the table using a dry rag and vacuum it thoroughly to ensure there will be no dust in the paint.

    • 4). Spray three thin coats of primer on the table top, allowing each coat to dry for about 10 seconds before applying the next one. Use a gray primer for dark paint colors and a white primer for light paint colors.

    • 5). Mix the paint with a paint stick and use a standard bristle brush to paint five thin coats of paint onto the table top. Use long strokes with the paint brush and allow the paint to dry for about 10 minutes in between each coat.

    • 6). Paint a clear coat of polyurethane on the table top using long, smooth strokes with a natural-bristle brush. Paint the polyurethane in the direction of the grain of the wood and overlap the brush strokes to get an even coat of sealant. Apply two coats of polyurethane, allowing it to dry in between coats.
