How to Layout a Long Narrow Room for a Banquet

    • 1). Take measurements of the room. If you plan to use any special items or areas -- such as a projector, DJ booth, wedding cake table or dance floor -- allot space in the middle of the room for them, and measure the allocated area.

    • 2). Subtract the allocated space from the total room space. The remainder is the amount of space you will have for tables.

    • 3). Get an accurate headcount of guests. Measure your tables, to determine how many you will need to seat all your guests. For example, a 30-by-96-inch table seats eight people, so if this is your table size, divide the headcount by 8 to determine the exact quantity of tables you will need.

    • 4). Set up the special items in the center of the room, such as the dance floor. Anything that needs to go on the floor, such as electrical cords, needs to be put down first.

    • 5). Position the tables so that they are parallel to the center setup and to each other. For example, in a rectangular room that runs east to west lengthwise, set up your tables running north to south.

    • 6). Leave 36 to 42 inches between each table, as a row for guests and waitstaff to walk through. Place the chairs at the table, leaving 24 to 30 inches of space between each chair. Add table cloths, chair covers, place settings and other decorations.
